The Andromeda Galaxy
An elongated blur in the night sky,
Twice the size of our own Milky Way.
Your light takes 2.5 million years to reach us.
We constantly look at your distant past through our telescopes.
There may be a planet like Earth within you right this moment,
Peering back, trying to locate us,
And finally observing how we were 2.5 million years ago.
Primitive life forms, plants, asteroid collisions and volcanoes,
A violent planet; a Goldilocks planet.
A day will come when you’ll see moments I experienced.
How I journeyed to Hobart.
Towards happiness. Towards Home.
Buying a precious-to-me, ordinary keychain
and a cactus who sat on my window sill.
Even massless light travels with my entire life within.
You’ll experience me one day, Andromeda.
And I will see Kunanyi again.
