This image of a cider gum graveyard was taken in the Central Plateau in September, 2025. The cider gum (Eucalyptus gunnii) is listed as endangered under Tasmanian and federal legislation as it is under threat from drought, fire and browsing by possums and sheep.
The tree holds cultural significance to Tasmanian Aboriginal people who traditionally consumed its fermented sweet sap, known as way-a-linah.
The cider gum is native to Tasmania and grows in higher altitudes like the Central Plateau, although there are some examples south of Hobart.
