Rick Crossland prefers to paint from life and outdoors (en plein air). His work has been described as real, impressionist, bordering on abstract. Light, atmosphere, life and an occasional hint of narrative are central themes.
His work has received recognition through a long list of awards, including recent 2022 winner of the prestigious Alice Bale Travelling Scholarship and Oil/Acrylic Art Awards and winner of the Art Society of Tasmania Annual Award in 2015 and 2020.
This is Rick's second solo exhibition after making the transition to full-time artist in 2021 following a 36 year career as an agronomist. The exhibition is largely a collection of plein air works done over the year at various locations in Tasmania, including Flinders Island.
“The subjects are diverse, images that suddenly caught my eye, that I found beautiful, transformed by the light and atmosphere at that time. ‘In the Blink of an Eye’ the scene can change but in each painting I have tried to catch an impression, a memory of that particular time and place. I want to convey to the viewer the real colours, mood and feeling of the place or object. “
