Publishing with Forty South

As a supported self-publishing company, we produce books under the Forty South brand and assist individuals and organisations who wish to publish under their own name/company.

We offer a range of publishing services, including manuscript assessment, copy editing, design, lay-out, printing, distribution and support with promotion and marketing. How To Submit Your Manuscript

If you wish to have your book published under the Forty South Publishing brand, the first step is to submit your manuscript for an initial review. This service is free and can be done when you complete the form below. Your submission should include:

  1. an electronic version of your completed manuscript (Word.doc preferred)
  2. a short (up to 500 words) synopsis of your manuscript
  3. a 200-300 word author biography, noting any previous works, relevant research, training or experience
  4. up to 5 sample images/illustrations in one file (if relevant)

We will aim to respond to your submission within three weeks.

Please note we only accept complete manuscripts. For children’s picture books, we require sample illustrations as well as text. We are unable to put authors in touch with illustrators, and vice-versa.

Work in Progress

If your manuscript is not complete and you wish to have a consultation prior to submission, this will incur a fee of $130 for a one-hour meeting. Please email submissions@fortysouth.com.au to arrange a meeting.

Manuscript Assessment

Due to increased demand, we can no longer provide free assessments of manuscripts. If you would like detailed feedback, we offer the following manuscript assessment services. The fees include GST:

  • Children’s picture books (up to 3 works and/or 6,000 words): $350
  • Children’s / Young Adult Fiction (up to 50,000 words): $650
  • Poetry Collection (up to 1500 lines): $490
  • Fiction / Non-Fiction (up to 50,000 words): $670
  • Fiction / Non-Fiction (up to 80,000 words): $760
  • Fiction / Non-Fiction (up to 100,000 words): $820
  • Fiction / Non-Fiction (up to 150,000 words): $900

Accepted Manuscripts

Once a manuscript is accepted for publishing, we meet with clients to determine the style of book that is likely to work best in the market. We then provide a quote for the services that are needed to get the book published. Please note every book we publish is bespoke, so we are unable to give publication estimates prior to the final quote.

As a point of difference from other fee-for-service publishers, we promote the book through our magazine, Forty South Tasmania (print and digital) and online through the Forty South Bookshop. We assist with promotion and promotional materials (flyers, launch invites, etc) and assist with the launch of the book.

We also offer distribution services within Tasmania.

Author/Client Rights

We do not enter into any contractual agreements with our authors/clients. Forty South authors/clients retain all publishing rights and own all books and design files. We only require authors/clients to notify their acceptance of our quote in writing.
