It is not often that I use this space to blow the horn of Forty South Publishing Pty Ltd (even though it is Tasmania’s biggest, best, most admired and most trusted book publisher). But occasionally an author walks through our door with something very special under their arm. When they are accompanied by an artist with something equally special under their arm, you get tingles all the way from your toes to your graphic design department to your commercial printing contact list.

The Forty South Publishing office was all a-twitter recently because one of those very special projects had just been introduced to the world. Here’s a sneak preview of the text:

Attention, attention, young bird lovers all!

Please come along to our masked costume ball.

Dress as the bird you would most like to be,

Tasmanian endemics will get in for free.

The Bird Lovers’ Ball is a blend of fantasy and non-fiction, involving children dressing up as native Tasmanian birds and going to a ball. Anne Morgan’s beautifully crafted rhyming text dances delightfully around Lois Bury’s exquisite artwork.

“Very special” might be underselling this book. An instant Tasmanian classic has been set free.

Lois Bury

Lois Bury has always enjoyed art. along with a varied nursing career, but in 2012 took the step to establish an art practice showcasing the endemic birds of Tasmania. Working at a gallery on Bruny Island was central to building her knowledge of birds. Illustrating became a natural progression and there are now 10 children’s books available, including the award-winning ’The Way of the Weedy Seadragon’ (2021, CSIRO Publishing). ’The Birdlovers’ Ball’ (2025, Forty South Publishing) is her favourite.
