Poet's corner
Sounds in the darkness
Lady Barron Falls. Photographer Geoff Wilmshurst

Smooth black rocks

Cold clear water

Deep pools of darkness

Surrounded by vibrant hues of green and brown

The sound of falling water

Breaking through the silence of the ancient forest

Shadows moving around in the ferns

Rotting logs scattered at the base of the falls

Life existing at a slower pace

The movement of moss growing

Of leaves returning to the dark earth

Life and death on nature's time

Ancient trees born and dying over millenia

Water flowing through subterranean caverns

Hollowing mountains

Emerging to tumble down smooth granite slopes

Flowing through lush ferneries and quiet glades

Sounds in the darkness

Life and death on a daily rhythm

The natural world and the order of life

Nature at peace

Time measured on a different scale

Dr Geoff Wilmshurst spent 40 years as a professional teacher in disability education. He now spends his time travelling , writing and painting, and enjoying life with his wife Lorraine. He lives in the Blue Mountains in NSW, and finds inspiration for his work in its environment and that of similar places such as Tasmania and New Zealand. He hopes through art and poetry to connect with others, to make a positive difference in their lives, and to share the experience of what it means to be human and part of the natural world.
